Healing is a lifelong companion. The human body is a miracle in action, which being made of living flesh, needs nurturing on an ongoing basis. For healing to be effective, equilibrium needs to be maintained between body/mind, soul and spirit.
The western medical concept of healing as a quick fix of the damaged part, is rather like a bad mechanic, who thinks to make a quick buck by fixing the endless problems presented in a car which never goes for servicing and is not cared for properly by its owner. Imagine if you gave your car the wrong fuel on a regular basis, never cleaned it, never changed the oil or the tyres. In no time you would have an old wreck to drive. And so it is with the bodies of a large number of people.
This is brought on in large part by faulty medical training for doctors, which focuses on parts and symptoms rather than the whole person, including looking into their diet, lifestyle, outlook and family situation. In my experience, most illness stems from harmful eating habits and toxic environment as well as a lack of understanding about how body, mind, emotions and soul are aligned.
An example: a man called me in desperation. He said he was extremely dizzy and the doctor had recommended surgery for his inner ear. He asked if there was any natural cure for his condition. I immediately asked him how much he drank each day. He replied, “A lot, at least six to eight cups of black tea. I asked him if he ever drank just plain water, and he said, “No.” I asked him if his doctor had asked him about whether he drank water and he said: “No, the subject had never been raised.”
I explained to him that black tea is dehydrating and that double amount of water is needed to make up for each cup of tea being consumed. He asked how I knew he was dehydrated, and I replied that dizziness is one of the first symptoms of dehydration. I advised him to stop the black tea completely for a few days and drink eight glasses of pure water per day and then get back to me about his situation. Four days later he called back in ecstasy. “My symptoms have gone completely!” he said. To him it appeared to be a miracle as he was saved the need of going for surgery.
In six years of medical school, it seems that very little time is given to the highly important subject of water and hydration as well as to the subject of nutrition. How can any doctor hope to be effective if they don’t have the training to deal with the most basic of human needs, food and water?
In some ancient cultures, people were saner about health and healing. In ancient China, if someone was healthy they paid their doctor an ongoing fee. If they fell sick, they would not pay the doctor. In short, the physician was paid to keep the person healthy!
In Ayurvedic medicine, (meaning the science of life) in India, the whole person is diagnosed rather than just the body. A combination health protocol is used, including plants and herbs, massage, particular foods according to the type of person, and cleanses which work not only on internal organs but also on the deep emotional psychology of the person. Preventative medicine and wellness is the norm.
One may think that such an ancient form of medicine cannot be compared with the advances and challenges of our current society but think again. Recently, there was a television documentary on Arte, a combination French German channel. The subject was a woman who had been told her cancer was incurable. Her doctor had informed her that she had a short time to live.
She hotfooted it to India and went to an experienced Ayurvedic doctor. She was cured and then went back to her western doctor, cancer free. He was astonished and being very open minded, he decided to travel to India and meet the Ayurveda doctor and have a discussion with him. A television crew went with him and made a fascinating documentary on the subject. The Ayurvedic physician informed the western doctor that in Ayurveda they have been treating cancer for thousands of years and have never thought it to be a difficult disease to cure.
In ancient Greece, it was well known that people were capable of accessing diagnostic tips and methods of cure for illness through their dreams. Special dream spaces were created where people could come and open to the wisdom arising out of deep restful slumber. The medical practitioner treating the patient would then provide interpretation of the dream in order to find the most appropriate treatment.
In ancient Egypt, there were special buildings devoted to the healing power of light and colour. A series of rooms, each one reflecting a different colour would be used in the treatment of imbalances in body and mind. In recent times, it has been proven that the cells of the human body communicate with each other through a combination of light and colour frequencies.
And in indigenous cultures, the power of music and trance dance is still used today to effect transformation and healing. I have experienced an all night Lila, a healing trance dance with healers from the Gnawa tradition of Morocco, which was utterly astonishing in its power and effectiveness.
Each new generation tends to believe that the new developments they have created are better than what came before. There is a tendency to want to throw out the old and begin ever fresh. However, innovation and true evolution comes from building intelligently on what came before. When we are able to learn from, absorb and use the best of what has been in our heritage, using the valuable lessons learned, and building on that, then we develop in an ever-renewing spiral of health, wealth and happiness. In this sense, the idea of throwing out centuries of tried and proven herbal remedies in favour of laboratory created drugs (with long lists of side effects) is pure idiocy.
Previous to the scientific revolution, it was well known that the human being is a unified conglomerate of body, emotions, mind, soul and spirit. With science, awe was replaced by an egoic mind-set, which sought to dominate nature rather than be nurtured by it. This is not to say that scientific innovation is wrong. Many scientific developments are simply wonderful. When science and spirituality meet, then we will have a truly unified world.
Dis-ease arises when there is an imbalance between body, soul and spirit. Whole person healing searches for where the imbalance is in the life-stream, and uses the appropriate treatment to bring equilibrium between these aspects.
An effective healer is knowledgeable about methods of diagnostics and treatment, which address the wholeness of who the person is. Treatment for illness may include massage, nutritional advice, inner child healing, emotional release, past life regression, detox treatments, purging, dream-work, Shamanic journeying, sexual trauma release and more.
The fear of getting in touch with and expressing emotions and where these are locked in the body lies at the heart of many imbalances. In my experience, if a person can locate the memory of a situation when their body and psyche went into shock or stagnation, and say what they couldn’t say then, pains that may have been there for 20 years, can disappear in an instant. This, combined with sane nutrition, proper exercise and rest, offers a milieu for optimal health.
Sexuality, emotions, creativity and intuition, all play a role in healing. When sexuality is flowing and alive, joy bubbles like champagne in a person, giving rise to creativity. When creativity merges with intuition, there is fulfillment of body, mind and spirit.
The master key to all healing is love. My teacher of Colourpuncture, Peter Mandel, made an interesting statement. He said, “Disease manifests wherever love is not. If you can bring love to that area, healing will automatically happen.” You may have heard the saying, “God is Love.” The reverse is also true, “Love is God.”
One might wonder, “How is it possible that we have places within us where love is not?” During my healing investigations, I have found that this happens because of either physical or emotional trauma. Life moves continuously like a river. If something shocking happens, the river of life force energy which was moving in a certain direction, gets confused and may start swirling around the trauma instead of continuing to flow. This eventually creates stagnant energy where the light of love has difficulty to shine. In short, disease is made up of unfinished business, something left incomplete in the person.
The good news is that there are many methods of healing which help us to get unstuck and in the flow again. Because of the current ‘medical mafia’ mind set around medicine, (making maximum profit from people’s physical and mental misery) it is necessary for each individual to be a detective in search of the best healing practices and healing path to follow for him or herself. Everyone needs healing, because healing is simply about balancing. Sometimes the body needs more attention, and sometimes it is the psyche.
If we move deeply into transformational processes where we ascend into higher realms of consciousness, we need to balance this by coming back to the body and supporting the body to absorb the transformation that has happened. Likewise, if we have gone through purging and cleansing on a physical level, we then need to open ourselves to emotional clearing or meditation to bring our psyche into resonance with our newly purified body.
As we continue on this journey, we realize that healing is actually all about discovering wholeness. In fact, just as the Ayurvedic sages discovered thousands of years ago, healing is the science of life.
I recommend the following methods for wellness and healing, born out of my direct experience with them. Let your intuition and heart guide you to one or more methods, which attract you. You can’t go wrong, as each one of these methods is phenomenal. Of course the effect is greatly enhanced if you find a gifted practitioner of the method (I list some practitioners whom I know).
