Kitchari – Healing Recipe from India


This healing recipe from India is the ‘go to’ food choice for anyone needing ‘comfort food’ or healing for tummy problems. It is based in the sattvic diet of Ayurveda. My friend, Sugandha, who is one of the best healers I know, sent this recipe to me.

What you will need:

250 g brown basmati rice

50g whole green mung beans

1 small onion

50g ghee or coconut oil

1 small piece of ginger, chopped fine

½ tsp natural salt

1 tsp ground dried turmeric

½ tsp ground cumin

2 cups high quality water


Prepare as follows:

Soak the basmati rice in water for 1 hour minimum.

Soak the mung beans for minimum 1 hour as well.

Rinse the rice and the mung beans.

Cook the mung beans with water just covering them, till they expand and split.

In a separate pot, melt the coconut oil or ghee and add the chopped onion and ginger. Stir and cook till these are golden brown.

Add the rinsed rice and the cooked mung beans. Add two cups of water, the turmeric, salt and cumin. Cook with a lid on over a low heat till all the water has been absorbed by the rice then take off the heat and allow it to sit about 10 minutes with the lid on, before serving it.

For those who prefer Kitchari as a soup, simply add a little water to make it the consistency you would like and heat the mixture for a few minutes then pour into bowls to serve.
